Oral Probiotics – What you need to know

Probiotics have been around for ages and we’ve all heard about them – healthy bacteria that helps the digestive system in the human body. Natural probiotics are found in foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir, pickles and kombucha tea. These active cultures restore the digestive tract’s natural flora after antibiotic therapy. So what is new you may ask?

ORAL PROBIOTICS is the new kid on the block. Oral probiotics helps to manage the biofilm (plaque) in your mouth and they can be of enormous benefit to your general oral health.

Oral Probiotics work by changing/altering the biofilm that covers the oral cavity so that it becomes healthier. It does that by replacing the cariogenic bacteria (Streptococcus mutans and Sobrinus) in the biofilm, and thus the biofilm grows much slower on the teeth. One could say that the oral probiotics manages the biofilm – clever little bugs aren’t they?

There are 3 main strains that help do this and the group is called Probiora 3. They are Strep oralis KJ 3, Strep Uberis KJ 2 and Strep rattus JH145.

So how do I take Oral Probiotics I hear you ask…easy!

  • Probiora 3 lozenges are given to children between 3-10 years of age, one lozenge a day.
  • Adults start off with 2 lozenges per day for 10 days and then only 1 a day for 90 days. It is taken after brushing and flossing or using any oral rinse. It is even pet friendly!

Patients who have a compromised immune system should not take Oral Probiotics. In cases like these, the biofilm can be managed more efficiently by using Xylitol products instead.
